Candied Flowers

Candied Flowers

Candied Flowers
Stop and Eat the Roses!

Pretty to look at,
wonderful to smell...
and delicious to eat!

What You Will Need:
  • Rose Blooms (or other edible flowers)
  • Stove
  • Sugar Syrup
  • Pot
  • Waxed Paper

CAUTION: This project requires adult supervision.

What You Do:
  • Carefully pick organically grown roses (since you are going to eat them, you don't want the roses to have chemical fertilizer or pesticides on them).
  • Carefully dip the flower into boiling sugar syrup. (To make sugar syrup, mix approximately 1-1/2 cups of water with 1-1/2 cups of sugar).
  • Place the sugared flower on waxed paper to cool.
  • When the flowers are cool enough to handle, spread out the petals and let the flowers dry in the sun or in a warm (not hot) oven.
  • Help yourself to your rose candy!

Additional Ideas and Tips:
  • Try this project with colorful Pansies, Johnny-Jump-Ups, Violets and other edible flowers.
  • Use the candied flowers to decorate a cake or a dessert.
  • Place several candied flowers on your child's plate after a meal — what a lovely surprise!

Variation:

Another way to make candied flowers is to lay your blossoms on a cookie sheet, then carefully paint them with egg white and sprinkle the flowers with plenty of sugar. Bake the sugared flowers in the oven at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for about 45 minutes. When the flowers are cool, use your candied blossoms to decorate desserts or eat them the way they are.
