Penny Hockey

Penny Hockey

Penny Hockey
He shoots! He scores!

Remember playing Penny Hockey
as a kid? Winter is a perfect time
to show your kids how to play this
fun indoor hockey game!

What You Will Need:
  • 3 Penny's to use as pucks (quarters or water bottle caps work well, too)
  • Table, Floor, or other Flat Surface
  • 2 Hockey Players

What You Do:
  • To start the game, players sit across the table ("rink") from each other. One person is Defense (the Goalie), and the other is Offense.
  • The Defense Goalie creates a goal by placing their two index fingers flat on the table about 4 inches apart, with fingers pointing towards the opponent. The Goalie must stay in place during the Offense players entire turn.
  • The Offense player places the three "pucks" in a straight line in front of him. To start his turn, he uses his fingers to "flick" the middle puck forward — this is a "pass".
  • Now he must pass the right or left puck forward, between the other two pucks. Passing continues with the following rules:
    - With each pass, the puck must move forward towards the opponent — you cannot move backward.
    - The puck must pass between the other two pucks without touching them.
    - All pucks must stay on the rink (table).
  • The Offense player can shoot the puck at the goal at any time during his turn, but the puck must pass between the other two pucks first.
  • The Offense player's turn ends when: a goal is scored!; or a puck is shot off the rink; or there is no room for a puck to pass between the other two pucks in a forward direction.
  • When the player's turn ends, players switch roles and play begins again.

Variations:
  • If you want to create more detail for your game, use a large sheet of paper to create your ice rink. Use markers or colored pencils to draw the lines, face-off circles, and goals. Don't have a large sheet of paper? We have a large Drawing Paper Roll that makes a perfect hockey rink!
