Halloween Fun with Test Tubes

Halloween Fun with Test Tubes

Test Tubes aren't
just for science!

Look at all the fun things
you can do this Halloween
with Test Tubes!

Mad Scientist fun!

Test Tube Punch
Use Test Tubes this Halloween to serve your party beverages! Everyone will feel like a Mad Scientist with this fun idea.

What You Will Need:

What You Do:
  • Place test tubes in a test tube rack or holder, and put them on your party table.
  • Prepare your favorite punch and put it in a bowl next to your test tubes.
  • Use a turkey baster or funnel to fill the test tubes with the punch.
  • Serve the test tubes to your guests.

Variations:
  • You may want to place labels on the test tubes so each person will remember which test tube is theirs.
  • Add Pipettes to the table and let children drink their punch using the pipette to extract the punch from the test tube, then squirt into their mouths! What fun!
  • If you prefer, you could place individual test tubes into tumbler-type glasses filled with ice cubes or crushed ice. This not only keeps the test tube upright, it keeps the beverage cold! (You could use science beakers instead of tumblers for even more of a Mad Scientist effect).
  • Make sure to use new test tubes that are washed well. Keep one set of test tubes for unique glassware, and another set for chemical experiments.

Test Tube Vases

What You Will Need:

What You Do:
  • Fill test tubes 1/2 full of water, then place the test tubes in a rack or holder and put it on your table.
  • Add one cut flower to each test tube. If you like, add a short cutting of vine to a test tube.

Variations:
  • This test tube vase idea can be used as a unique centerpiece on a Halloween party table.

Test Tube Color Play
Let children concoct their own "spooky secret sauce" with test tubes and colors!

What You Will Need:

What You Do:
  • Give each child a test tube rack full of empty test tubes, a pipette, and a small container filled with water.
  • Put a drop of liquid water color paint into the bottom of the test tube — one color for each test tube.
  • Children can now use their pipette to add water to their test tubes. Young children love to see the color appear, as if by magic.
  • Let your children experiment by mixing colors to see what kind of "spooky secret sauce" they can concoct.
  • Encourage children to come up with creepy, fun names for their mixtures.

Variations:
  • You might want to have your child work on a tray (or cookie sheet) to contain any spills.
  • Make sure to let young children know not to drink the water in the test tubes!

Test Tube Ice Cube Treats
Kids love ice cubes, and this Halloween, you can have them help you in your Laboratory to create spooky science cubes!

What You Will Need:

What You Do:
  • Place test tubes in a test tube rack or holder.
  • Have your children help fill the test tubes with their favorite juice. Make sure to fill each test tube no more than 3/4 full.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring, if desired, to create creepy colors.
  • Place test tubes and rack in your freezer to create the ice cubes.
  • When the juice is frozen, take the test tubes out of the freezer and let them sit for a few minutes to make it easier to release the ice cube. (You could also run the test tube until luke warm water - just be careful not to use hot water or the test tube could crack).
  • Remove the frozen juice from the test tube and serve!

Variations:
  • If desired, you could add small bits of dried fruit or raisins to the juice before freezing. Kids like to pretend these are the flies in their putrid frozen treats!

Test Tube Candy Jars
Here is a fun way to serve small Halloween candies at a Halloween Party!

What You Will Need:

What You Do:
  • Fill each test tube with a small Halloween candy (Candy Corn, colorful Skittles, M&Ms, etc.)
  • Place the filled test tubes in a rack and put the rack on your Halloween party table.
  • Guests love to help themselves to your Mad Scientist Candy!

Variations:
  • Create fun, creepy labels for your test tubes if you like. Candy Corn could be "Monster Teeth", Skittles could be "Eye of Bat" — you get the idea.

Test Tube Bath Chemistry
Let your children become Mad Scientists this Halloween — in the bath tub! Create sparkly, bubbly bath salts with this easy recipe.

What You Will Need:

What You Do:
  • Combine the Kosher Salt, Table Salt, Glitter, and Scented Oil and stir until the texture is smooth.
  • Drizzle a small amount of Baby Shampoo onto your mixture, and then spread the mixture onto a parchment paper covered cookie sheet until you have an even layer.
  • Allow this mixture to dry. (This could take up to 24 hours).
  • Once your bath salt mixture is dry, place into a test tube.
  • When it's bath time, pour one test tube into the bath water and have fun!

Variations:
  • If you would like, add small drops of food color to your initial mixture to make a variety of bath salt colors.
  • Young children love to play with the test tubes in the bath water! Scoop and pour as they pretent they are scientists — good clean fun!

Test Tube Secret Sauce Beverages
Kids of all ages absolutely love this idea!

What You Will Need:

What You Do:
  • Prepare the test tubes with a variety of powdered drink mixes. For example, put Cherry Kool-Aid mix in one test tube, Orange Kool-Aid mix in another test tube, etc.).
  • Give each child a bottle of water. (We like to remove the label for more effect).
  • Have children add a little bit of powder from each of the test tubes to their bottle of water — they are concocting their own Secret Sauce!
  • Drink and enjoy!

Variations:
  • Children absolutely love to add the different colored/flavored powders to their bottles of water! The colors appear as if by magic. What color did your child end up with?
  • Encourage children to name their new Secret Sauce Flavor!
